Do Travel eSIMs Route Your Traffic Through Another Country?

Travel eSIMs often give you an IP address in another country. We explain provider breakout locations, what breaks, and how to check where your data exits.

Yes, in most cases they do. Nearly every travel eSIM is technically a roaming product: the profile on your phone belongs to a "home" operator based in one country, and you use it while permanently roaming on local networks everywhere else. Your phone talks to a mast in the country you are standing in, but your data usually travels back to the home operator's core network, or to a third-party gateway, before it reaches the open internet. The point where it finally exits, known as the breakout point, is often in a completely different country.

That is why a traveller in Tokyo with a European travel eSIM can open an IP-check site and find they are apparently browsing from Frankfurt or Amsterdam. A 2025 study by researchers at Northeastern University tested 25 travel eSIM services, including Airalo, Holafly and eSIMaccess, and reported that "in almost all cases the device's public IP address did not correspond to its physical location". Some traffic even crossed networks the customer was never told about, including China Mobile infrastructure in Hong Kong.

None of this means travel eSIMs are unsafe, and occasionally the routing is genuinely useful. But it does explain a whole family of complaints we see in customer reviews: streaming apps showing the wrong country's library, banking apps demanding extra verification, delivery apps insisting you are somewhere you are not, and video calls that lag more than the signal bars suggest. Why your eSIM's data exits in another country

Travel eSIMs are roaming products

When you buy a country plan from a travel eSIM brand, you are almost never getting a SIM from that country's own operators. The profile is issued by a sponsor operator, and your phone roams on local networks under a wholesale agreement. Two architectures dominate, and both were measured in detail in a 2024 academic study of Airalo's ecosystem published on arXiv.

The first is home routing, the classic roaming setup. All data goes back to the sponsor operator's core network before breaking out to the internet. The study found several Airalo eSIMs provisioned by Singapore's Singtel worked this way, so a user in Europe or South America had their traffic hauled to Singapore and back. The measured cost was severe: home-routed eSIMs showed latency inflation of around 621 per cent compared with a native local SIM.

The second is IPX hub breakout, where a third-party carrier hub handles the internet exit closer to the user, at least in theory. The same study found these exits concentrated in the Netherlands, France, the UK and the US, and noted that for half of the hub-breakout eSIMs the exit was actually further away than the sponsor operator's own country. In one case, traffic from users in France and Uzbekistan broke out in Virginia in the United States even though an Amsterdam gateway was available.

What providers admit

Holafly is unusually direct about this. Its help centre states that "we use a method called home-routed roaming that allows us to deliver coverage via international gateways", and that "some of our trusted partners assign IPs from their own infrastructure, regardless of your physical location". Holafly acknowledges the visible side effects: pages in another language, local content from the wrong country, ads and prices in a foreign currency. This matches the pattern in customer reports we reviewed, where Holafly users around the world commonly see European IP addresses.

MobiMatter, as a marketplace selling plans from more than 30 operators, explains that "each one provides a unique IP address based on the operator's specific network in each country or region", so your breakout depends entirely on which operator's plan you pick. Its help centre also warns that some services block specific IP ranges, citing TikTok and OpenAI restrictions on Hong Kong IPs as examples. Most other consumer brands publish nothing about routing at all, a transparency gap both the Northeastern researchers and independent networking writers have criticised.

What actually breaks when your IP is in the wrong country

Streaming shows the wrong country

Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Sky, Hulu and most sport services decide what you can watch from your IP address. With a travel eSIM that breaks out in Europe, a UK viewer in Spain may find iPlayer works by accident, while an American in London sees a European Netflix catalogue instead of the local one. The behaviour is arbitrary because you cannot choose the breakout, and it can change mid-trip if the provider shifts you to a different gateway. If a specific service matters to you, test it on day one rather than assuming.

Banking and payment apps get suspicious

Banks score login risk partly on location consistency. When your card is being used in Lisbon, your GPS says Lisbon, but your IP says Singapore, some apps respond with step-up verification, temporary blocks or fraud calls. Networking commentators reviewing eSIM hub routing note that platforms "check for consistency" and can flag the mismatch as suspicious. Local services think you are somewhere else

Search results arrive in the wrong language, delivery apps refuse your address, dating apps match you with people a continent away, and some ticketing or government portals block foreign IPs outright. MobiMatter's advice is sensible: turn on GPS-based location permissions for apps that support them, because GPS still reports your true position even when your IP does not.

Latency: the tromboning penalty

Every kilometre your packets travel to a distant core network and back is added delay, sometimes called tromboning. The Airalo study measured it directly: home-routed eSIMs suffered latency several times higher than local SIMs, with users in Pakistan and the UAE exceeding 150 milliseconds far more often than physical SIM users. Even the better hub-breakout setups added roughly 64 per cent. For browsing you may not notice. How to check your breakout location

You do not need any technical skill to find out where your traffic exits. Turn off Wi-Fi so you are definitely using the eSIM, then open an IP-check site such as ipinfo.io, iplocation.net or whatismyipaddress.com in your browser. The country shown is your breakout location, and the named network (the ASN) tells you whose infrastructure you are on. Geolocation databases can lag behind roaming reality, a problem IPinfo itself has written about, so checking two different sites gives a more reliable answer.

Do this on the first day of a trip, before you rely on the eSIM for banking or streaming. If the breakout is somewhere unhelpful, your options are switching provider, using your bank's app over hotel Wi-Fi, or adding a personal VPN so you control the apparent location yourself, which we cover in our guide for VPN users.

Which providers give you any control?

Most do not, but a few now treat breakout location as a feature rather than an accident.

Ubigi offers a genuine IP location tool at no extra charge for residents of ten countries: France, Canada, Belgium, Japan, Australia, the US, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore and the UK. You toggle your home-country IP on or off in the app, and because it works at network level Ubigi says it avoids the latency cost of a bolted-on VPN.

Saily, from the Nord Security family, includes a virtual location feature in its app that "re-routes your traffic through a remote server" in a country you choose. It is effectively a built-in VPN layer on top of the eSIM, useful for both privacy and geo-consistency, though Saily does not publish where its default breakout sits.

Yesim bundles a free VPN with its plans, activated with one tap in the app, although independent testing in 2026 found the VPN only worked on iPhone at the time of review. Holiday.com's eSIM comes from the ExpressVPN team but notably does not include a VPN. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and most marketplace operators offer no user control over breakout at all: you get whatever gateway your plan happens to use.

When foreign routing is actually useful

China without a VPN

The best-known upside is China. Because roaming traffic breaks out abroad, it never passes through China's domestic filtering, so Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and other blocked services simply work. Nomad states this explicitly for its China plans: "providers like Nomad eSIM route your data through servers outside China before it reaches the internet", adding that the bypass "happens at network level, not through VPN software". The same behaviour is widely documented for other roaming-based eSIMs from Airalo and Holafly in traveller comparisons. A modest privacy layer, with caveats

An IP address in another country does loosely decouple your browsing from your physical location, and some travellers like that. Be realistic, though: your provider still knows exactly where you are from the network you are roaming on, as we explain in what your eSIM provider can see about you, and lawful-access questions follow the operators involved, which we unpack in our guide to eSIMs and government tracking. The Northeastern study is also a reminder that opaque routing can mean your data crosses jurisdictions you never chose. Foreign breakout is a side effect, not a privacy product.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Blocked services work in censored countries, documented most clearly for China plans.
  • One eSIM keeps a consistent IP across a multi-country trip, so sites do not re-localise at every border.
  • Home-country breakout, where offered (Ubigi, or Saily's virtual locations), keeps banking and streaming behaving as if you never left.

Disadvantages

  • Streaming libraries and regional services follow the breakout country, not you.
  • Banking and payment apps may trigger security checks on the location mismatch.
  • Tromboned routing adds measurable latency, badly on home-routed plans.
  • Almost no provider tells you the breakout location before purchase, and it can change without notice.
  • Your traffic may cross networks and jurisdictions you were never told about.

Who should choose what

If you mainly browse, message and navigate, breakout location barely matters and you can buy on price and coverage as usual; start with our best budget eSIM rankings. If you depend on a home streaming catalogue or a nervous banking app, pick a provider with location control: Ubigi if you live in one of its ten supported countries, or Saily for its app-level virtual locations. The verdict

Travel eSIMs really do route most traffic through another country, and the industry has been slow to say so plainly. Holafly at least documents its home-routed model, MobiMatter explains the mechanics honestly, and academic measurements have now mapped what Airalo's ecosystem actually does, but for most brands the breakout location remains undisclosed until you test it yourself. Our position is straightforward: this behaviour is neither scandal nor selling point in itself, but it is material information. It decides whether your bank trusts you, what Netflix shows you, how your calls sound, and which jurisdictions your data crosses. Check your IP on day one, favour providers that either disclose their routing or hand you control over it, and treat any eSIM's location behaviour as unverified until you have seen it with your own phone.

How do I find out which country my eSIM traffic exits in?

Turn off Wi-Fi, connect over the eSIM, and open an IP-check site such as ipinfo.io or iplocation.net. The country and network shown are your breakout. Check twice with different sites, since geolocation databases sometimes disagree about roaming addresses.

Will my banking app stop working on a travel eSIM?

Usually it works, but the mismatch between your card activity, GPS and a foreign IP can trigger step-up verification or fraud flags. Keep your home SIM active for verification texts, or use a provider that can present your home-country IP, such as Ubigi in supported countries.

Can I stream my home Netflix library with a travel eSIM?

Only if the breakout happens to sit in your home country, which you cannot normally choose. Streaming services follow your IP, so most travellers see the breakout country's catalogue. Saily's virtual locations, Yesim's bundled VPN or a personal VPN give you actual control.

Why does my eSIM reach Google and WhatsApp in China without a VPN?

Roaming data breaks out of the internet abroad, so it bypasses China's domestic filtering at network level. Nomad documents this explicitly for its China plans, and the same applies to most roaming-based travel eSIMs. A local Chinese SIM, by contrast, is filtered.

Does a foreign IP address mean my data is being spied on?

Not by itself, but it does mean your traffic crosses infrastructure in other jurisdictions, sometimes undisclosed ones, as the Northeastern University study showed.
