Is a Travel eSIM Connection Reliable? What Travellers and Remote Workers Should Know
Travel eSIMs are reliable enough for most trips, but throttling, roaming quirks and activation snags can bite. Here is what the evidence shows in 2026.

Our reading of the evidence: deprioritisation is real but uneven. On a quiet network you will rarely notice it. In a packed stadium, a busy airport or a city centre at rush hour, a roaming eSIM is more likely than a local SIM to slow down first.
What speeds can you realistically expect in 2026?
Credible independent testing suggests travel eSIMs are genuinely fast where the underlying network is good. "Unlimited" plans and throttling: the small print that decides your workday
No mainstream "unlimited" travel eSIM offers unrestricted high-speed data. Every provider applies either a published daily cap or a fair-use policy, and the difference between their throttle speeds is the difference between a usable connection and a dead one.

- Holiday.com (built by the ExpressVPN team, sold as a standalone eSIM with no VPN included) publishes the most worker-friendly policy of the three: 3GB per day at high speed, then unlimited data at 10 Mbps. Ten megabits is enough for a stable Zoom or Teams call, which makes the throttle a slowdown rather than a stoppage.
- Airalo and MobiMatter mostly sell fixed-allowance plans, which never throttle - they simply stop when the data runs out, so keep the top-up screen handy.
